How many laps is a 500 m swim? Approximately the equivalent of 450 meters, 500 yards is four and a half laps in an Olympic-sized – or 50 meter – pool; a lap is two lengths, or as they say in swimming, “there and back.” In a standard-sized pool – or 25 meters – 500 yards is nine laps.

500 meters swimming will help you stay fit, but it’ll require a lot more than that to reduce your weight. To attain optimum fitness, one should perform a combination of cardio, strength and flexibility exercises. Swimming is a cardio activity, so just doing that will not keep you fit.
If your pool is 25m, 500m will be 20 lengths. Swim 5 sets of 100m (4 lengths in a 25m pool) at a steady pace. Take 30 seconds rest after each 100m. Try not to get out of breath by slowing down, relaxing and breathing out when your face is in the water.
It is obviously quite slow for competitive swimming, as mentioned, but swimming a kilometer is a very good exercise at any speed.
Swolf is the blending of the words Swimming and Golf. Swolf is a score that measures your swimming efficiency, and just as in golf, a lower score is better.
You should start with a moderate pace and endeavor to maintain it. If your best 50 is 33 seconds, you should aim for a pace of about 40–45 sec/50 yds during the 500 and do your best to hold this pace. There are no tricks, the 500 is a tough race at your age. Master pace and you’ll optimize your results.

Swimming 500 yards is not an easy task. It requires a lot from your body and you need trained muscles and lungs. To build endurance, throughout a long training swim, include bursts in which you go all out for a certain distance — such as one lap or a length of the pool — before returning to your normal pace.
You should be in good enough shape to swim at a relatively hard pace for 10 minutes or 550 yards (22 pool lengths in a 25 yard pool) so you know that you can pass the USLA swim test. A good workout would be 100 yards(4 laps), 200yds(8 laps), 300 yds(12laps), 400yds(16laps) and a cool down of 50 yard (2 laps).

The 400 metres, or 400-metre dash, is an endurance race event in track and field competitions. It has been featured in the athletics programme at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1964 for women. On a standard outdoor running track, it is one lap around the track.
Traditionally in sports, a lap refers to the completion of a course. In a swimming pool, the “course” is a bit more ambiguous. The Olympics defines a lap as one length of the pool. It’s worth noting, however, that Olympic pools are 50 meters in length, while most recreational lap pools are 25 yards or 25 meters.
The average swimmer can move at a speed of about 2 miles per hour, which is about the same as taking 56 seconds to swim a 50 metre length of a pool. For comparison, Michael Phelps, the aquatic champ, swims at a speedy 6 miles per hour, according to ESPN.
As a guide, a swolf score of between 35 and 45 over 25m is very good, or over 50m scoring in the low-70s is excellent.
