How much does 3/4 inch plywood weigh?
How much does a 4×8 1/2 inch piece of plywood weigh? A typical 4′ x 8′ sheet of 1/2-inch Pressure-Treated Plywood weighs around 60 lbs.
Is plywood heavier than MDF? MDF weighs more than plywood.
As it’s quite a bit denser than plywood, MDF weighs considerably more. This can be a major issue if you’ll need to lift, hold, or clamp panels in place or construct something that requires an overhead reach, such as elevated shelves.
Can you use 3/4 plywood subfloor? The recommended thickness of the plywood subfloor is governed by the spacing of the joists. Some experts suggest that 15/32-inch plywood should be standard if the underlying floor joists are spaced 16 inches apart or less, but slightly thicker 3/4-inch plywood should be used for joists spaced further apart.
Engineers have rounded-off weight calculations for plywood to square foot calculations, and have decided that, for engineering purposes, a generic square foot of 3/4-inch-thick hardwood plywood weighs 2.3 pounds. A 4-by-8 sheet of plywood equals 32 square feet, so 32 times 2.3, is just over 70 pounds per sheet.
A 12-by-36-inch piece of 3/4-inch fir plywood can easily support 50 pounds.
Plywood is lightweight
For all its strength, plywood is surprisingly so much lighter than solid wood. That makes plywood even more perfect for furniture-making. Heavier solid wood, meanwhile, can prove to be rather unwieldy when crafting furniture or when using it for other commercial applications.
3mm plywood sheets can be used for a multitude of purposes, from bath panelling and sheds to storage containers and floors. From wall insulation and structure to roofing, 3mm plywood has the added benefit of being thin enough that it can be bent into shape too, for added versatility in how it is used.
MDF is banned in United States because it contains formaldehyde, which means that when painting unfinished pieces you should never use paint or any other type of finish containing this substance.
Plywood sheets are also so much lighter than particle boards. They are easier to carry from area to area, or floor to floor. Being heavier, wall cabinets or wheeled furniture made purely of particle boards could collapse under its own weight.
The weights of osb and plywood are similar: 7/16-inch osb and 1/2-inch plywood weigh in at 46 and 48 pounds. However, 3/4-inch Sturd-I-Floor plywood weighs 70 pounds, 10 pounds less than its osb counterpart. Plywood is made from thin sheets of veneer that are cross-laminated and glued together with a hot-press.
Sizing the Plywood
No matter what the spacing is on your ceiling joists, 3/4-inch plywood should be used if you plan on walking on it. If you plan on placing the plywood around the perimeter of the opening or door and using it only to store light boxes or materials, 1/2-inch-thick plywood should suffice.
OSB and plywood offer similar (and sufficient) performance in terms of strength and functionality, though plywood is about 7% stronger. Plywood will absorb moisture quicker than OSB, but consequently it will also dry quicker.
The National Tile Contractors Association and the Resilient Floor Covering Institute both recommend plywood for subflooring and underlayment, because it doesn’t have the risk of swollen edges that OSB does. Plywood also has a slight advantage in stiffness, which means that subflooring panels need not be quite as thick.
The answer is marine plywood. It is the strongest and toughest of all plywood on the market. High-quality glues hold the plies in marine plywood together. That makes them structurally sound and resistant to moisture.
While OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is generally cheaper than plywood, it is heavier and not as stiff as plywood and can result in soft squeaky floors under weight. The biggest complaint against OSB is that it doesn’t handle moisture very well so it is more suited for indoor use.
That’s what we’ll be answering in this article. A 1/2″, 4′ by 8′ sheet of MDF weighs around 58 lbs (or 25 kg for an equivalent 12mm thick, 2440mm by 1220mm metric sheet). MDF is denser than softwood plywood (37.5-50 lb/ft³ versus the plywood’s 28.75 lb/ft³), making it much heavier.
You can build a bench from plywood but it must be sturdy. If you laminate the plywood together, it gives you all the strength you need. Plywood also works well for this because it’s dimensioned perfectly, it’s square, it won’t split and it remains stable if exposed to moisture.
Due to its inherent strength (see below), OSB is particularly suitable for load-bearing applications in construction but it also has a wide range of other applications.
Although plywood, particleboard and solid wood are all wood products, each has its own weight to volume, due to the inherent binding adhesive and the quality of the wood. Density is the best way to determine which product is heavier within the same species and grade of wood.
Strength and Stiffness
Solid wood is significantly stronger than plywood, especially in terms of stiffness. A shelf made from solid wood will sag less than one made from plywood of the same dimensions. Plywood does not do this.
Disadvantages: Weather: One of the downfalls with plywood is its susceptibility to accumulate moisture and become weathered. This is, of course, unless you buy plywood specifically rated for outdoor use. Appearance: You obviously won’t use plywood to finish your kitchen cabinets.

Wood dust poses the following risks to worker health: Inhaling dust into the lungs can cause breathing problems and lead to lung diseases such as occupational asthma and lung cancer. Breathing in dust is the most common type of exposure to wood dust. Getting dust in the eyes can cause irritation and damage.
Plywood is stronger – Although plywood is made of very thin sheets of wood veneers, plywood is stronger than plyboard. It is thicker, and the thickness of the material is uniform, unlike plyboard that only has softwood strips in its core surrounded by the veneer sheets.
