How Much Land For Sheep?
How much land do you need for 3 sheep? Raising fiber animals is popular among homesteaders, especially those who knit. You will need to figure on one acre of pasture land for each three adult sheep you plan on raising and your shelter should allow for 15 square feet for each ewe and her lambs.
How much property do you need to raise sheep? Sheep don’t require as much space as some larger livestock, like cows. A half-dozen sheep can happily live on just one acre of land, and a flock of more than 100 could be kept on 30 acres. Sheep should never be kept alone as they are social animals.
Can I have a sheep in my backyard? Can you raise sheep in a large backyard? In some cases the answer is yes. Sheep are adaptable and can be cared for in a paddock or small field if their needs are met. We have successfully raised goats for many years, a small herd of beef cattle and my sweet little herd of sheep.
Sheep need many essential nutrients. These include sodium and chloride (salt) as well as selenium, a naturally occurring mineral. To supplement, farmers hang salt blocks or pour loose salt into feeders.
Sheep are perfectly”designed” to not only live on grass alone, but thrive on it! They can carry multiple lambs, make milk to nurse their young and really put on their weight with access to high quality forage.
Typical stocking densities on productive grass can be approximately six to 10 sheep per acre. However, the stocking density will vary according to climate, topography and grass quality (both farm specific and seasonal variations).
It’s recommended that you begin with 2 sheep per acre and never exceed 4 sheep per acre. When you do decide to add more, you’ll more than likely have to make the proper accommodations. For example, grass, flowers, and other vegetation tend to grow best in the spring.
Goats are generally easier to handle than sheep during routine procedures, like deworming, vaccinating and hoof trimming, because frightened sheep, even if they’re usually tame, run and run. You must have a catch area to nab them.
Goats are more profitable than sheep. These factors include the price that goats or sheep sell for at market. Their age to maturity and the number of kids each year also affect a farmer’s profitability. Lastly, goats and sheep both produce multiple products that can be marketed including wool, milk, and meat.
Admittedly, there are some difficulties to raising sheep: They’re not as easily fenced as cattle (but they’re a lot easier than goats), and although they tend to be less susceptible to diseases than other types of livestock are, they’re more susceptible to parasites. While this will vary, a younger (two-to-four-year-old) productive commercial (non-registered) ewe can usually be purchased for $200 to $250. Depending on their age, lambs can be bought for $75 to $150.
For the small farmer or homesteader, Merino sheep would be a good choice for home meat production because they are easy keepers. Although the lambs won’t reach standard market rate as quickly as those of other breeds, small-scale operations can certainly afford to forgive this tidbit.
Copper is a required mineral for all farm animals and also is potentially toxic to all of the food-producing animals. Sheep are the most susceptible of all food-producing animals to copper toxicosis. Copper nutrition in sheep is quite complicated. It is a required mineral for sheep, yet highly toxic.
Sheep Salt Lick — Pure salt or a salt/mineral mixture which generally hangs from a rope near the sheep’s water supply. These can be placed on the ground, and are an excellent way to supplement ewes late in pregnancy who require additional minerals and protein to produce strong, healthy lambs.
Grain is easier to handle and less bulky to store than hay. Wheat, barley, sorghum, maize, oats and sheep nuts are commonly available and often used for feeding sheep.
Sheep are ruminants and flock animals, meaning they’ll graze on pasture and will be happiest with at least one other sheep; however, you’ll also need to be able to afford supplemental feed and provide clean water for the flock.

Lamb is meat from a sheep that is less than a year old. It is a delicious and rich source of protein that has important vitamins and minerals. When consumed in moderation, it is a healthy addition to a well-balanced diet.
The advantages of raising sheep in a dry climate are less parasite pressure and the drier air keeps the sheep themselves dry. Not a shock there! Sheep themselves being dry reduces some of the problems that are more common in flocks living in wetter areas like poopy butts due to a spring flush of grass.
