Where Did Sheep Originally Come From? Sheep were first domesticated from wild species of sheep at least 5000 bce, and their remains have been found at numerous sites of early human habitation in the Middle East, Europe, and Central Asia. Domesticated sheep are raised for their fleece (wool), for milk, and for meat.
Where did sheep first originate? Sheep are most likely descended from the wild mouflon of Europe and Asia, with Iran being a geographic envelope of the domestication center. Before hand shears, ancient people would pull the wool that naturally came off the sheep, or “roux” the wool from the sheep. And before sheep were domesticated (about 11,000-13,000 years ago), wool shed naturally and pulled off when it got caught on branches or rocks.
Today, the domestic sheep herd is one-tenth the size it was during World War II. The decline is the result of economic and cultural factors coming together. And it has left ranchers to wonder, “When are we going to hit the bottom?” Some sheep are raised for their wool, others primarily for food.
Spanish sheep were brought to America in 1492 by Christopher Columbus. These sheep became the ancestors of today’s Churros breed. Via Hernan Cortez, sheep spread through Mexico and the western United States.
Sheep cannot live without the shepherd. They are entirely dependent on the shepherd for everything. They require constant care and watching over. So leaving them unattended can put them at risk and greatly endanger their lives.
Male sheep are called rams, the females ewes, and immature animals lambs. Mature sheep weigh from about 35 to as much as 180 kg (80 to 400 pounds).
The Karakul may be the oldest breed of domesticated sheep. Archeological evidence indicates the existence of the Persian lambskin as early as 1400 B.C. and carvings of a distinct Karakul type have been found on ancient Babylonian temples.
Shearing requires sheep to be handled multiple times – mustering, yarding, and penning – which is stressful to sheep. In addition, shearing itself is an acute stressor. The potential for pain is present where sheep are wounded or injured during shearing.
A castrated male goat is a wether. Goat meat is called goat or chevon, and mutton in some areas. A male sheep is a ram or a tup. A castrated male sheep is a wether.
If a sheep goes too long without being shorn, a number of problems occur. This can cause sheep to become overheated and die. Urine, feces and other materials become trapped in the wool, attracting flies, maggots and other pests. This causes irritation, infections and endangers the health of the animal.
By definition (1) vegans do not participate in any form of exploitation of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose. This makes wool firmly not vegan. A lot of people still feel shearing a sheep’s wool is a harmless practice, as visions of sheep-shearing are often associated with the innocence of shaving a pet.
The meat from a lamb is tenderer as compared to the meat obtained from an adult sheep. On the other hand, mutton has more flavor. For most people that enjoy eating whole cuts like roasts and chops, lamb does the trick. It is mainly because of the tenderness of meat obtained from lambs.
Like cows, pigs, and chickens, lambs are raised in filthy factory farms, subjected to cruel mutilations, and horrifically slaughtered. But this cruel and painful mutilation is performed without anesthetics and often leads to infection, chronic pain, and rectal prolapse.
Lamb meat is more expensive than other meats because there is less total meat per animal butchered and the carcass yield is lower than most other meat animals. It’s because of the lamb being smaller than a pig or a steer, but still having a high cost per pound live.
In the 1400’s, Queen Isabella of Spain used money derived from the wool industry to finance Columbus and other conquistadors’ voyages. In 1493 on his second voyage to the New World, Columbus took sheep with him as a “walking food supply.” He left some sheep in Cuba and Santo Domingo.
Venison originally described meat of any game animal killed by hunting and was applied to any animal from the families Cervidae (true deer), Leporidae (rabbits and hares), Suidae (wild pigs) and certain species of the genus Capra (goats and ibex).

Currently, there are about twenty thousand sheep farmed in Japan, but most of these are fat stock and not for wool. Leftover wool, after the sheep have been consigned to meat, is mostly thrown away .
