Where Do Dorper Sheep Originate From? The Dorper Lamb breed was developed in the 1930’s in South Africa by cross breeding a Dorset Horn ram with Blackhead Persian ewes to develop a low maintenance yet fertile sheep-meat breed.
What are Dorper sheep good for? Skin from the Dorper is highly sought after for its unique quality and is used in the manufacture of fine leather goods. Dorper lamb is well known for its mild flavor and tenderness. The nonselective grazing habits of the Dorper allow them to maintain their condition when the quality of grass and other forage declines.
What is the difference between a Dorper and a White Dorper? The only difference between the Dorper and White Dorper is in the colouring of the head. The Dorper has short dullish-black hair whilst White Dorpers have dull white coloured hair. Despite this difference, the term “Dorper” is often used to describe both breed types.
How many babies do Dorper sheep have? The fertility of Dorper ewes was approximately 0.90 ewes that lambed per ewe mated, with a litter size ranging from 1.45 to 1.60. The gestation length of Dorper ewes was approximately 147 days, while they were reported to start cycling as soon as 52 days after parturition.

The Dorper carcass has good meat and fat distribution. The Dorper is one of the most fertile of all sheep breeds, with lambing intervals of only 8 months. Lambing percentages in excess of 150% (2.25 lambs per annum) are possible and well over 100% is readily achievable in most areas.
Although there are some hair sheep breeds that are prized for their fiber, this is not a trait that you’ll enjoy with the Dorper sheep. You can certainly raise these sheep as dairy animals if you’d like but the milk production is better with breeds like East Friesians or Laucaunes.

Open a large round bale of hay in the pasture and spread the hay out to encourage the sheep to eat. Add another bale when the flock finishes the first one. Keep the water trough filled with clean, fresh water. Dorpers are hearty eaters and must stay well-hydrated to prevent impaction.
Body lice (Bovicola ovis) infestation can occur on fleece-shedding and haired sheep, causing irritation and rubbing. Some exotic diseases also cause skin irritation to sheep. There is no one sheep stocking rate per acre which is considered ideal for all climates and pasture conditions. But, a good rule of thumb is 10 ewes and 15 lambs per acre of pasture. This assumes that you will be using a well-executed rotational grazing regimen.

Feed a young lamb four times per day. Allow the lamb to drink as much as he wants at each feeding until he is a week old, then limit the amount to 20 ounces per feeding and two feedings per day. Offer a Dorper lamb will consume grain and alfalfa hay as soon as he is able to stand and eat.
This approach can result in the expression of undesirable traits, genetic deformities and, ultimately, inbreeding depression. Therefore, the disadvantages of inbreeding outweigh the advantages for all but a small number of top purebred sheep breeders.
The Katahdin, St. Croix, Barbados and Dorper are the most popular breeds of hair sheep raised for meat. The Katahdin is a hardy, easy-lambing animal that produces a quality carcass. The Dorper, though a bit fattier if not processed early, is also a good meat breed choice.
